Although the first few years of the seventeenth century were relatively peaceful, however, in the empire, it was an unpredictable beginning to most brutal war of all time fought solely because of religion. It is said to be one of the most destructive wars in all of European history and also one of the longest wars ever recorded.

Bismarck did not directly have any impact on how these wars were fought, however he did have a hand in how they started. The war of , as suggested in his speech to Disraeli in , as a pretext to go to war with Austria in the future. One of the reason was that after the Treaty of Vienna in , Prussia had been given the rhineland, which was rich in natural resources, however it was separated from the rest of Prussia due to Hanover, a deeply catholic state that aligned with Austria.
