I am currently a Principal Research Scientist at Amazon. Until December , I was a tenured associate professor of computer science at the University of Central Florida. I have also worked as a data scientist at Row Sham Bow , which is developing some very exciting analytics technologies for online games. Email: mtappen at cs.

I work closely with Yandex Research. I do research in machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing. Most of all, I like cases when knowledge accumulated in different fields comes together and resonates. My current projects are mostly concentrated around generating structured objects from a description in natural language. I'm also currently fascinated with program synthesis.
Vladimir Arnold dies at 72; Russian mathematician
Vladimir Arnold, a Russian mathematician who pioneered work on the arcane field known as catastrophe theory and whose work on the KAM theory led to a better understanding of the motion of planets in the solar system and a host of other applications, died of peritonitis in Paris on June 3. He was He was highly honored, receiving the Crafoord Prize in , the Shaw Prize in , and the Wolf Prize, which some consider the mathematics equivalent of a Nobel, in He should have received the equally prestigious Fields Medal in , but the Soviet government refused to let him accept it.
In recent years, graph cuts have emerged as a powerful optimization technique for minimizing energy functions that arise in low-level vision problems. Graph cuts avoid the problems of local minima inherent in other approaches such as gradient descent. The goal of this thesis is to apply graph cuts to a classical computer vision problem — scene reconstruction from multiple views, i.
