This is an independent capstone course and a requirement for the BA in Philosophy. It is designed as an opportunity for you to bring your philosophical interests, your writing, and oral skills to a level appropriate for a graduating senior majoring in philosophy. It is important to make this project reflect your competence as a philosophy major at Stetson, especially if you are planning further study at the graduate or professional level. As a philosophy major you are encouraged to begin thinking about a senior thesis early.
Senior Thesis & Undergraduate Research
Syllabus | Thesis Research Design Seminar | Political Science | MIT OpenCourseWare
This seminar is for students who plan to write a senior thesis in Political Science, and is required of all MIT Political Science majors. Seminar participants will develop their research topics, review relevant research and scholarship, frame their research questions and arguments, choose an appropriate methodology for analysis, draft the introductory and methodology sections of their theses, and write a complete prospectus of the project. The final grade will be determined after consultation with thesis advisor and is heavily weighted by the quality of the final draft of the prospectus. Don't show me this again. This is one of over 2, courses on OCW.
Guidelines for the Senior Project
In this semester, students will select and finalize a thesis committee, submit the thesis proposal, make all necessary revisions to the thesis proposal, and produce the first draft of the thesis. As such, it should be treated as a serious and academically rigorous component of the program. Each project is unique to the student completing it, and thus there is flexibility in scheduling, approach, and style that is up to the discretion of the thesis advisor.
History encompasses the whole of human experience, helping us understand ourselves in the context of our times and traditions through the study of times and traditions other than our own. History means not only the record of the past but also the discipline of investigating and interpreting the past. The study of history develops habits of critical thinking and effective writing, as well as it cultivates the careful analysis of various types of quantitative and qualitative evidence. It should be of value not only to undergraduates who intend to pursue advanced degrees in the field, but also to students interested in exploring the diversity and complexity of the human past, even as they hone their analytical and expository skills.
