When we think of the deep-rooted social evils in our society, dowry system seems to be one of the most influential of them. With its adoption across different communities across religions or caste has led to a century old ceremony turn into a social atrocity. Be it in cash or kind, additional financial burden takes a toll on the sufferer. Similarly, the oxford dictionary defines it as the amount of property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage.
Structure of dowry in India
Even during the Stone Age, men were considered to be the food-gatherers or hunters, while women were responsible for looking after the young ones. Much later, as human societies grew and evolved, political organizations began to be formed. In the oldest democracy of the world, women were not even considered to be primary citizens of the state. Representation of women in the public and political sphere was limited, and due to this, gender inequality still exists even today.
Though the practice of dowry is publicly condemned, legally banned and morally despised of in practice it still persists as some of the supporters of this system argue that this practice has its advantages. The advocates of the practice of dowry say that the dowry, money, utensils and other house hold articles that a bride brings at the time of marriage help the newly married couple to establish their new home and also enables them to furnish their home with necessary accessories. Practice of dowry makes the marriage of ugly looking, uneducated and aged girl easy as huge amount of dowry acts as effective and useful method for luring suitable bride groom for the bride. The practice of dowry solves the financial problem of poor young bachelors and gives support for higher education to prospective bridegroom.
